THE SCB STORY BEGINS AND ENDS WITH THE VISION, RESILIENCE AND GENEROSITY OF DRUMMER AND CO-FOUNDER TRACY SMITH. AS TRACY TELLS IT:
It was 2008. Me and my brother-in-law [and best friend], Brett Adoff, were talking and we both realized we loved music and wanted to get back into playing again. I had last played in school in the marching band and jazz band. So we started jamming to bands like Dave Matthews, oar, vertical horizon and Sublime.

We soon realized we wanted to take it further, so with me on drums and Brett on acoustic guitar, we set out to find a bass guitar player. That led us to Mike Black, who remains one of our best friends to this day, even though he?s no longer with the band. Blackie?s influences were jam bands, as well ? like Grateful Dead, Phish and Social d. Before we knew it, we had picked up Jason Lenig on lead guitar and started preparing for gigging out as ?Money Shot.?

We renamed ourselves ?Smith Compound Band? about a year later, at the suggestion of Brett`s wife, Missy. Since I live on a farm and all my family lives around us, we had always called it the ?Smith Compound.? You can connect the dots from there.

A few years passed and Jason needed to move on, so we found our next lead guitarist, Jack Wieand, who was going to help us out until we found a full time player. He became available when his band, Tutor, broke up and the members all went their separate ways.

Over the next four and a half years, we went through several bass players, singers, other guitar players and even a keyboardist or two. In late 2012, Brett moved to New York for work and family, and that put us in a real bind, since he dominated vocals and Rhythm guitar. We worked around that for awhile, using a number of fill-in guitarists and vocalists, and even trying out a whole new lineup and direction for the band. Nothing seemed to work.

In 2014 I needed a break from the band, with other things in life taking my attention. We agreed to put SCB on mothballs.

Fast forward to mid-February 2015. I contacted a bunch of our past members, including Jack and fellow lead guitarist Mike Brusko, and we agreed to meet for beers one Sunday afternoon at the 1760 House in Trexlertown PA.

?I booked a few gigs at the [Macungie VFW] Tiki Bar this summer,? I announced, as a table full of guys nearly spit out their beer. ?The first one is May 18. Who?s in?"

We played a few gigs, reconfigured the lineup a few times and ended up having more fun -- and success -- than we've ever had.

I?m honored and blessed to have the best singers, players and just outright great friends playing with me. We have Jack on lead guitar, Mike Brusko on lead guitar and vocals, and the two best band babes on the planet -- Wendy Meixell and Justine Williams -- on lead vocals fronting the band, and finally Mike Callahan on bass guitar.

We all truly enjoy just being around each other and, of course, gigging together.
