Additional Info: Alzonia began formal music training hot on percussion at the age of 9, in Atlantic City NJ. His Grandmother was from Barbados and loved music, his Mother and Father always had lots of music playing, all kinds of music, and it was the variety of hearing jazz, calypso, classical, R n B, reggae, etc.... at a young age that led to his style of composition as well as his playing style.
Alzonia would win music awards all through his high school years, and in his last year of high school he ranked as the #1 percussionist on the national level and toured Europe as principal percussionist with the American youth orchestra.
In 1982 Alzonia moved to Phila. to attend a five year college program, he would go to school in the day and gig with various bands at night, as leader or sideman playing drums or other percussion. In 1987 he graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and decided to start a band to perform island music he named the band Steel Source. Alzonia, having a background in so many styles of music began to combine soca, jazz, and R n B and arrived at a very unique approach to playing steel drums.
Through the years Alzonia and the Steel Source Band have continually grown in popularity, and have performed on the main stage at Penn's Landing to kick off the Columbus Day festival in Phila. PA. |
